Structure and Application of Rail-mounted Container Gantry Crane

Rail-mounted container gantry crane is mainly used for container unloading, handling and stacking in container railway transfer yards and large container storage and transportation yards. The rail-mounted container gantry crane is composed of main beam, rigid and flexible supporting legs, traveling trolley, lifting mechanism, crane traveling mechanism, electrical system, operating cab, etc. Rail-mounted container gantry crane generally requires a large clearance in the width direction of the supporting legs, so the upper part of the supporting leg is opened into a U-shape to connect with the upper part of the supporting leg, and a trolley maintenance frame is erected. Rail-mounted container gantry cranes can load and unload 20', 40', 45' international standard containers. The lifting capacity are generally 36t and 40.5t. According to the different sites, container storage and transportation process and loading and unloading vehicles, the span can be 26m, 30m, 35m; the cantilever is divided into structural forms such as no cantilever, single cantilever and double cantilever; the lifting height can be divided into three to four piles and four to five piles. There are two types for container rotation: upper trolley rotation and lower spreader rotation.

Operation and Control of Rail-mounted Container Gantry Crane

The rail-mounted container gantry crane is operated by the driver operating the linkage platform in the cab. The cab is generally suspended under the lifting trolley and runs with the trolley. The entire operation of the crane can be realized on the linkage platform of the cab. The gantry crane can also be operated on the running side of the crane to facilitate the temporary lifting of the crane. When operating on the running side of the crane, it is electrically interlocked with the main operating linkage table.

The drive control of rail-mounted container gantry cranes is currently commonly used as an AC variable frequency speed regulation system. The control system mostly adopts communication control, and the inside of the container adopts wired mode, which is characterized by fast speed and high reliability. An integrated crane management system can be selected, and data can be transmitted wirelessly with the external control room, and the operating system of the crane can be continuously monitored, fault diagnosis, and data collection collected by cooperating with logic control.

Technical Characteristics of Rail-mounted Container Gantry Crane

  • The energy feedback device can effectively save energy.
  • The eight-rope anti-turnover mechanism in the container spreader space effectively prevents the spreader from swinging and twisting.
  • The intelligent fault detection system can better perform fault analysis and early warning of equipment.
  • The separated electrical room and the traveling trolley reduce the running load of the trolley and reduce energy consumption.
  • The advanced automatic correction system for cart walking reduces the problem of crane gnawing and increases the service life of the equipment.
  • The intelligent safety monitoring and management system is better suited to the needs of freight yard safety monitoring and automated management.

Applications of RMG Cranes

Rail-Mounted Gantry Crane is a type of port equipment that is used for intermodal container handling. RMG cranes are manufactured to individual customer needs in a variety of different stacking heights and spans. They can stack containers up to eight high and have a span of up to 70 metres. They are equipped with anti-sway and drive systems that provide high productivity and reliability. Some of the applications of RMG cranes are:

  • Loading and unloading containers from trains at rail terminals
  • Stacking containers at container yards or terminals
  • Moving containers between different modes of transport, such as ships, trucks or trains
  • Operating in semi-automatic or fully automatic modes with remote control or supervision

Differences between RTG crane and RMG crane

RTG crane and RMG crane are both types of port equipment that are used for intermodal container handling, but they have some differences in terms of their technical performance, loading and unloading performance, operation performance, economic performance and automation performance. Some of the main differences are:

  • RTG crane is powered by diesel engines and can move around on rubber tyres, while RMG crane is fully electrified and can only move along fixed rails.
  • RTG crane can span 5-8 containers in width and 3-5 in height, while RMG crane can span wider and higher than RTG crane, allowing for more container storage capacity and efficiency.
  • RTG crane is operated by onboard drivers and has lower data communication requirements, while RMG crane can operate in semi-automatic or fully automatic modes with remote control or supervision and has higher data communication requirements and more onboard monitoring equipment.
  • RTG crane emits exhaust gases and noise pollution, while RMG crane does not.
  • RTG crane has lower initial investment cost but higher operating cost, while RMG crane has higher initial investment cost but lower operating cost.
